Jekyll & Hyde

Functioning as a nail salon by day and a cocktail bar by night, FUUR saw the tension between the two components of the space as an opportunity to create something interesting in Jekyll and Hyde.Taking inspiration from alley bars in Tokyo and Melbourne, we came up with the concept of an “internal street”, giving the nail salon its own enclosure that could be screened off after business hours, and allowing the cocktail bar to infuse the “street” with its own clientele and energy. We also flipped the positions of the bar and nail salon, originally envisioned by the client to be at the front and back respectively, so as to obscure the bar from the entrance and main street.

To enhance the indoor/outdoor atmosphere of the space, a set of wooden ceiling rafters stretching across the entire length were installed, and concrete walls with patterns were cast, adding a certain surrealism to the space.
